Internet security tips

The Internet is a vast worldwide network of computers all capable of connecting to each other in an instant. Information flows between the computer you are using now and the Bank computers through the Internet. This page is an example of information that came to you from our computers through the Internet.

Secure Session

Our Internet service uses a secure session between your browser and our systems. Secure sessions, for example in Internet Explorer display a small padlock in the status line of your browser window. If you double-click on this padlock, you should be able to view our server certificate. For more information about server certificates visit www.verisign.com (our certificate issuer’s web site).

Security Tips

Our security tips are not comprehensive and are only provided for your guidance. If you need to know more about staying secure with the Internet there are many sites you can visit that specialise in security and many specialised sources dealing with the Internet.

  • Never write down your passwords.
  • Change your passwords frequently.
  • Don’t tell anybody, including Bank staff, your passwords.
  • Don’t tell anybody, including Bank staff, your user identity.
  • Don’t allow your computer to remember your user identity or passwords.
  • Don’t use the auto-complete features of your browser.
  • Always obtain and apply any security patches recommended by your computer or software supplier.
  • Protect your computer with a password.
  • Protect your computer with anti-virus software and always get the latest updates from the supplier.
  • Protect your computer against hackers with a firewall and always get the latest updates from the supplier.
  • Set your browser for the highest level of security that allows the service to function.
  • Make sure that your sessions with our service always show the security icon in the status bar of the window.
  • Make sure that you configure your computer to always check the security certificate of our site. If the certificate is invalid or missing, then don’t use the service.
  • Always Log Out when you have finished using the service.
  • Don’t use someone else’s computer, as you won’t be in control.
  • Avoid computers at Internet Cafes, airport lounges or hotels.
  • Follow all of the Bank’s guidelines regarding your ATM card and the PIN.
  • Follow any security guidelines published by the industry, your computer and software suppliers.

If the list of tips seems long, don’t be dismayed. Your computer and its software is probably easy to use and easy to configure if you just go through it one easy step at a time.
